Steve’s BEST OF E3 2015: TOP 5!

Here we are again: Another year, another E3! The gaming mecha has been and gone for 2015, and it hasn’t failed to impress.

Sony and Microsoft, now deep into the new generation of gaming, have bought their A-Game, delivering a number of big surprises. Who will take out my Top 5? Read on to find out!

Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Wildlands

Ubisoft’s E3 Press Conference was once again headed up by the excellent Aisha Tyler, and in amongst copious amounts of banter and some cringe-worthy moments (including a terrible musical performance), there were some game announcements. Although I could place a few of them at number 5, the one that stood out for me was GR: Wildlands. This open-world third person shooter looks part bounty-hunter, part special-operations. Given the disappointing progression of “The Division“, Wildlands now holds my hope for an open-world third person experience. I’m looking forward to seeing more gameplay in the months to come.

Final Fantasy VII: Remake

Now sure, this game wasn’t playable at E3 – nor did we see any gameplay. But the sheer fact that Square are planning on remaking what is possibly the most beloved RPG of all time? It deserves a place in this lineup. Sony and Square have teased a potential HD remake for years (since back in the early days of the PS3) but only now have we had an official acknowledgement of its existence. FFVII Remake will be released first on PS4, with hopes of a release of the Xbox One once exclusivity runs out.

Halo 5: Guardians

Everyone expected Guardians to make an appearance at E3 this year, given its release date toward the end of this calendar year. Not only does Halo 5 look gorgeous, but the narrative looks on track to be one of the best yet. The “Hunt the Truth” viral marketing campaign that was distributed in the run up to E3 frames an interesting change in the Halo universe: Not all is well with the Master Chief and allegiances are being tested. Enter: Spartan Locke and Fireteam Osiris to hunt down the chief and his friends in Blue Team.

Star Wars: Battlefront

This much anticipated entry into the beloved Battlefront franchise has not disappointed. We finally got to see gameplay at E3, both on Hoth in the “Walker Assault” mode, and on Tatooine as part of the Co-Op, mission based experience. This game looks incredible, and seems to retain much of what made the original entries great. Fans of the series are clamoring for information, and two gameplay videos should hopefully tide them over until later this year when the game releases.

Fallout 4

How could Fallout 4 not win E3 2015. No other game – and no other Developer (in the form of Bethesda) – was able to knock it out of the park quite like Fallout 4. Announced shortly before E3 began, it’s gameplay reveal at the start of the expo was the first, and in my opinion, best showing of the conference. A full 30 minutes in which lead developer and game director, Todd Howard, owned the stage, and showed just why Fallout is one of the biggest game franchises on the planet. This opened ended, RPG-Shooter experience is a top contender for game of the year, and it’s my game of the show.
